Khayelitsha-based travel agency, ABCD Concepts, has been offering international and domestic travellers the kasi experience through educational tours, South African cuisine, and socio-cultural exchange.
Established in 2015 by Khayelitsha natives Buntu Matole and Ayanda Cuba, the company emerged as a response to socio-economic challenges faced by the township: high unemployment rates, poverty, and crime.
In contrast, just a stone’s throw away from Khayelitsha, lies the modern, cosmopolitan city of Cape Town. Surrounded by nature and known for its beautiful beaches, stunning biodiversity, and Table Mountain (one of the 7 Wonders of the World), Cape Town attracts domestic and international travellers who explore popular attractions such as Cape Point, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the V&A Waterfront, and Robben Island.
The idea of offering a different, unconventional, and inclusive experience came about by chance. Buntu and Ayanda would often travel to the city for studies or to run errands, and it was during these trips that they would encounter tourists. The duo identified a gap in the market: a kasi experience offering socio-cultural tours that explore the history behind townships—an essential addition to any Cape Town itinerary.
Khayelitsha, which means “New Home,” is vibrant, full of culture, and demonstrates entrepreneurial spirit with an array of shops, restaurants, and businesses that reflect the community’s diverse heritage. ABCD Concepts offers a range of authentic experiences for locals and international guests.
Experiences You Can Look Forward To:
Cycling Experience: Ride through the vibrant community, immerse yourself in the lifestyle, and learn about the history and heritage of this fast-growing township. Visit local landmarks like the Khayelitsha Remembrance Square, engage with local entrepreneurs, explore entrepreneurial hot spots, experience local party venues, taste local cuisines, and learn a bit of the local language.

Jogging in the Township: Enjoy a 5 to 10 km jog through Khayelitsha’s formal and informal settlements, business districts, and schools. Visit a coworking space and make a pit stop at the local café and coffee brewer, Siki’s Koffee Kafe. Experience the hustle and bustle of the community while staying active.
Khayelitsha Walking Tour: Take a 2½-hour introductory walking tour of the community. Explore Site B, the first informal settlement in Khayelitsha, catch a local taxi to the Khayelitsha Remembrance Square (a monument made of mosaic artwork), visit Khayelitsha Mall, and explore Mini Africa—a local informal market filled with entrepreneurs from other African countries.
Cooking with Local Families: Enjoy a cooking experience and learn how to make daily meals enjoyed by people in the township. Our local families/hosts will give you background information on the day’s menu, provide cooking ingredients, and share recipes that have been passed down through generations and are still enjoyed communally in typical Xhosa homes. You’ll learn how to make traditional dishes such as:
- Umfino
- Amanqina
- Umphokoqo
- Homemade Lamb Stew
Khayelitsha Party Experience: “Groove in Ekasi” (a local slang meaning “Party in The Township”) and experience the best party in Cape Town. This experience combines good food and great music with local knowledge through an immersive walking tour of the community – ending your day with a groove like no other.
